According to Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine, between 9% and 15% of people living in the U.S. avoid receiving dental care because of fear and anxiety. That comes as no shock to Rene Piedra, DMD (www.afraidofthedentist.net), whose dental practice in Coral Gables, FL, welcomes patients who are leery about going to the dentist. “Every day, we see patients who have dental anxieties, fears, and phobias,” says Dr. Piedra. “These fears can have a devastating effect, since postponements in receiving dental care can impact a person’s self-confidence, appearance, and well-being. Left untreated, dental problems can have far-reaching consequences, severely affecting patient health.”

People with dental anxieties are increasingly seeking “sedation dentistry,” and dental practitioners around the country are changing their techniques in response to patient demand. These newer types of sedation dentistry are much more than a shot of Novocain. Instead, nitrous oxide gas, oral medication, and intravenous drugs may be employed to put the patient in a relaxed, conscious state while the dentist performs the procedure. While Dr. Piedra is considered an expert in sedation dentistry, he believes that sedation is over-prescribed. “Sedation should be the last resort - not the first course of action,” he says. “It’s a quick remedy that may address the symptoms of anxiety, but not the underlying cause.”

Dr. Piedra differentiates between dental anxiety, dental fear, and dental phobia, and uses a range of techniques to alleviate apprehension at its roots. “Dental anxiety is basically the fear of the unknown, and can usually be addressed by taking the time to familiarize a patient with the office, the equipment, and the procedures,” he says. “Dental fear elicits more of a ‘fight or flight’ response, and typically can be stopped by giving patients more control over their experience. Dental phobia can be tougher to overcome, but the same desensitization techniques used to treat other phobias also work nicely with dental phobia.”

As a case in point, Dr. Piedra cites the experience of a woman who had visited another dentist and received general anesthesia, only to awaken in the middle of the procedure with a tooth lodged in her throat. Terrified, the patient doubted she could overcome her fear long enough for Dr. Piedra to finish the procedures she so desperately needed. “I started by showing her all of the instruments we would be using and honestly discussing every nuance of the procedure,” he says. “Then she went back in the waiting room until her apprehension subsided. She then came back in and allowed me to do an examination, and then went back out to the waiting room. We repeated the process over the course of several hours, but in the end she received treatment that same day with no sedation.” A few visits later, both the patient and her husband shed tears of relief because she was able to finish the course of treatment with no sedation whatsoever.

Dr. Piedra asserts that taking the time to unravel the basis of dental fear and anxiety can pave the way for sedation-free treatment. “Unfortunately, many people have had humiliating or negative experiences with other dentists, or have picked up on a parent’s dental anxiety,” he says. “Uncovering the source of the problem enables us to develop valuable strategies that will lead to successful treatment.”

By acknowledging that the needs of patients differ, Dr. Piedra’s team can adapt treatment to fit the individual. “For some people, headphones and a comforting blanket will do the trick, while others might need to touch the instruments,” he says. While Dr. Piedra is quick to note that sedation should always be an available option, his first goal is to increase a patient’s comfort level. “If we can alleviate the anxiety, fear, or phobia, it will not only improve a person’s dental health, but their general well-being,” he concludes.

Dr. Rene Piedra Can Help Even If You’re Afraid of the Dentist

“It is not uncommon for someone to lose at least once in their life and for many it could be significantly more. Tooth loss also becomes more of a problem with age,” says Dr. Rene Piedra. “This is definitely something that we have been seeing with baby boomers who are now starting to come into the age range where this is now becoming an issue.” A dental implant takes the place of the missing tooth’s root and can help prevent additional health and cosmetic issues.

Known as the “people dentist” in Coral Gables, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami Beach and surrounding areas, Dr. Rene Piedra and his team keep themselves abreast of current technologies and practices that help them to bring the best of dental care to their patients.

The fact fewer people these days lack the teeth of previous generations, is largely due to advances in modern dentistry. With current dentistry techniques, “people can have now have a natural-looking, beautiful smile regardless of what life has dealt them.”

Missing teeth are usually the result of accidents, gum disease or poor dental health. According to Rene Piedra, DMD, “In almost all cases, gum disease and poor dental health is simply due to lack of education or proper dental care.” Proper dental care includes not only brushing and flossing your teeth on a regular basis but also encompasses, proper nutrition and other issues.

Leaving the missing tooth space empty may not sound too serious, but the consequences of not filling in the space from the missing tooth can include:

* The teeth adjacent to your missing tooth can change position to fill the gap resultiing in a improper bite which can lead to other health issues
* The loss of your missing tooth’s root can cause your jawbone to shrink, making your face appear prematurely older; and,
* A missing tooth in the front of your mouth can affect your smile and your self-confidence.

In many situations, a dental implant is the most pleasingly esthetic solution for replacing missing teeth. A dental crown or dental bridge, secured to a dental implant, can provide a complete and beautiful solution for improving your smile.

“New advances in dental implants are one of the most important developments in modern dentistry and Rene Piedra, DMD and Associates is proud to be able to help bring this advancement in dentistry to our patients” say Dr. Rene Piedra. Because of advances in dentistry, in materials, instruments, techniques and chairside manners it is more than ever, less challenging to have dental treatment completed. “Many of our patients are afraid of the dentist but have come in due to pain or because of a friend or family member. However, after their first visit, they so surprised after experiencing our care that they realize they will do fine on their future visits to our office,” concludes Dr. Rene Piedra.

“Retractors, drills, burs, probes and excavators. That sounds more like a construction zone then a place to maintain healthy teeth,” says dentist Rene Piedra, DMD (http://www.afraidofthedentist.net). It’s no wonder that according to the National Dental Information Center, 95 million Americans are afraid of the dentist. Odontophobia or being afraid of the dentist is so common that more and more patients are avoiding their dentist appointments or taking unnecessary measures to mask the experience. “Rene Piedra, DMD & Associates have made it a personal mission to eradicate this fear and change the face of dentistry,” says Dr. Rene Piedra.

Known as the “people dentist” in Coral Gables, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami Beach and surrounding areas, Dr. Rene Piedra and his team embrace several practices to help people to not be afraid of the dentist.

  • They help patients get to the root of their problem rather then try to offer unnecessary medication by actually listening to patient concerns. Rene Piedra, DMD & Associates established a call center where patients can discuss their anxiety about dental procedures.
  • During the appointment, the element of the unknown is eliminated. Patients are walked through the entire process and can choose to view everything on state of the art computer monitors.
  • Using the latest in dental technology, regular procedures are now less invasive and easier on the patient.
  • Rene Piedra, DMD & Associates’ offices are uniquely set up so that when you come in, you will be welcomed into a soothing environment and greeted with a smile with no chemical smells or drill sounds.
  • Patients worried about the cost can relax. Dr. Piedra works with a variety of financial institutions which allows them to offer no down payments and interest free loans.

“It is all really about the people not the teeth,” concludes Dr. Piedra. “Out of all of the patients whom initially got treatment under sedation, more than 90% of them are now able to receive dental care without it! It is always our goal to get the patient past their fears.”

Whether you like it or not, the appearance of your teeth has a dramatic effect on both how others perceive you as well as your own self-image and self-esteem. Studies have shown that a person’s appearance will have a strong effect on their social and career success, by influencing how others perceive them. In fact, over 70% of Americans believe that an unattractive smile can hurt career success. “We believe it is important to help people in their everyday lives by giving them beautiful smiles,” states Rene Piedra, DMD.

While the appearance of the teeth is one of the most important contributors to facial beauty, it is also probably the most often neglected when improvements to appearance are sought. A person with low self-esteem connected to their facial appearance, can often be greatly helped by cosmetic dental procedures. Dr. Piedra mission is “to provide my patients with healthy teeth and gums for a lifetime. Having the smile you want is no longer a matter of fate but one of choice.”

What is surprising to most is that no matter what the problem with your smile, there’s a way to make it absolutely stunning.

  • Stained, discolored teeth can be whitened
  • Crooked, overlapped teeth can be straightened
  • Chipped, broken, worn teeth can be repaired
  • Unattractive metal fillings can be replaced with natural-looking restorations
  • Missing teeth can be replaced
  • Gaps between teeth can be closed
  • Gummy smiles can be fixed

Smile makeovers have become more common, less invasive, faster and more effective in correcting cosmetic dental problems. “The effect of these procedures can be nothing short of dramatic both in terms of appearance and also in terms of correcting, at least partially, personality deficiencies caused by poor self-image,” says Dr. Piedra and his many happy patients would agree.
